About
Marios is a Founding Partner and Managing Partner of the firm, leading its Banking and Finance practice, and one of the longest-standing banking and finance lawyers practising in Greece. Admitted to the Athens Bar in 1969, he has been the principal legal advisor of a large number of domestic and international clients, advising commercial banks, financial institutions and large corporates on the transactions and regulatory questions that have defined the Greek banking sector for more than five decades — from the early years of a nationalised banking system through to the post-2010 wave of consolidation, NPL securitisation and recapitalisation. He has served as General Counsel of the Bank of Central Greece and of Egnatia Bank (before its merger to become Marfin Egnatia Bank), and as General Counsel of Attica Bank. He also served as Manager of the Legal Department of the Bank of Central Greece and of Egnatia Bank. He has been General Counsel to Agrotiki Bank, the Cooperative Bank of Peloponnese and, until recently, Pancreta Bank S.A. Beyond the banking sector, he served as Legal Director of Texaco Hellas and has acted for major names in the automotive and industrial space, including Toyota and I.N. Theocharakis.
His recent work has included the full arc of Attica Bank’s non-performing loan programme — Project Artemis I (securitisation of an NPL portfolio of approximately €1.3 billion, with €525 million senior and €806.2 million junior notes), Project Artemis II (€700.5 million) and Project Kairos (the sale of Class B notes to TOCU Europe II S.à r.l. and the handover of servicing to the acquiring investor). He has also advised Pancreta Bank on its acquisition of the Greek operations of HSBC, its merger by absorption of the Cooperative Bank of Central Macedonia and a €98.71 million share capital increase.
Clients value his combination of rigorous legal analysis and institutional insight drawn from in-house leadership roles across the sector. He works in high-stakes and time-sensitive environments where regulatory soundness and commercial objectives must be reconciled, and is widely consulted on questions where legal form meets banking-supervisory expectation. He regularly advises on complex financial transactions and issues involving capital markets legislation, and is the co-author of the books of Neate and Godfrey on “Bank Confidentiality” and “Money Laundering” published by Bloomsbury Publishing. He is a certified arbitrator in Greece under both the Athens Bar Association’s DSA catalogue and the Athens Mediation & Arbitration Organization (EODID), has served as Chairman of the Board of the Association of Hellenic Law Firms, and is a Regular Member of the Legal Council of the Association of S.A. Companies and Entrepreneurship (SAEE).
